Boxing is one of the most effective striking skillsets and also one of the most popular combat sports in the world. Its a highly skill based sport in which two people engage in a contest of strength, speed, agility, reflexes and endurance. Punches are the only strikes allowed, and gloves are used to protect the hands from injury. Amateur boxing is an Olympic and Commonwealth sport and is a common fixture in most of the major international games. It also has its own World Championships. Professional boxers are the highest paid athletes in the world.
The highest level of amateur achievement for the sport is the winning of an Olympic gold medal, and as a professional, winning a world title from one of four main sanctioning bodies (WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO). Notable practitioners include Mike Tyson, Vasyl Lomachenko, Muhammed Ali, Roy Jones Junior, Sugar Ray Leonard, Joe Fraiser and many others.
