Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ).

Brazilian Jujitsu, which is often simply referred to as BJJ, is a martial art and combat sport that focuses mainly on ground game and grappling techniques. It was popularized by Helio Gracie and his brothers, who modified Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and Judo to form a unique grappling style. The Gracie family, since then have been responsible for making BJJ a unique art form, teaching it across the world.

The main focus of the art is on leverage and technique, using which a smaller person can dominate submit and a larger and stronger assailant. It is not just a martial art, it is also a sport, a method for promoting physical fitness.

BJJ & MMA.

BJJ is an excellent system for submission fighting, and has evolved alongside mixed martial arts since it’s conception. Since an MMA fight has both striking and grappling, knowing what to do when wrestling on the floor is key. These are the skills BJJ teaches:

1) Position Control: Staying in a dominant position when grappling on the floor is important. Not only does it get you points, but it also makes sure you don’t get beaten to a pulp.

2) Ground and Pound: One of the most popular strategies in MMA is the ‘ground and pound’. It’s when you get on top of the opponent and use a barrage of punches and elbows to knock him out. Training in BJJ helps with gaining the position needed for this.

3) Submissions and Chokes: Ground fighting’s most important aspect is submission. BJJ has some of the most effective locks and holds that have helped a lot of fighters win matches in the UFC.

BJJ for Fitness & Health.

BJJ is an art where all muscles of the body are working for any of the movements. It improves your endurance and cardiovascular performance by leaps and bounds. The constant movement and increased heart rate assist in shedding any unwanted body fat. Regular grappling and training can give the body a great tone, along with increased joint mobility and an improvement in flexibility. Overall, BJJ is great as a sport, martial art or as a physical discipline for fitness.
